Baby food spice jars…

Posted on

In my online browsing I came across some cute baby food spice jars here. I decided I just had to make some myself, but I changed it up a bit!

Here’s what you need:

  • baby food jars (I used #1 jars, the smallest) washed and dried
  • strong magnets
  • E6000 or another strong adhesive
  • vinyl with spice names (or a sharpie if you have nice handwriting!)
  • spices

I found it to be easiest to place the vinyl down on the counter

and line up the jar through the bottom.

It made it easier to center the vinyl on the jar.
Rub your vinyl

Remove your application tape!

Then get the lid, magnet & E6000, and apply and let it fully dry. (in this image I have 1, 8mm magnet. I ended up using 3 magnets in the end to get it to stay put. I have ordered larger magnets, 20 mm, and it shouldn’t be a problem).

I like to order my magnets at dealextreme. They have free shipping, but be aware it can take about a month to get your order.

Now you’re ready to fill your jar

And your set!

Depending on how many you are making they would great on the back of the stove:

I ended up putting a metal bar under my cabinets so I could have more:

They also would be great on the side of a refrigerator. This same idea would be great in a craft room with pins, buttons, etc!

Have fun!

  1. Great idea. I like the idea for the craft room too. How about cotton balls, and hair clips in the bathroom. I think I’ll label bottles on top for the drawer. Thanks.

  2. Where did you get the piece of metal? How much was it and was it hard to put on the wall under the cupboard? I would love for you to make me some vinyl but first I need to secure a place to put them.:)

  3. That’s a terrific idea! It looks like it holds more than the traditional jars and would be easier to refill as well. I’ve got a ton of baby food jars. I think I will try this! :)

  4. Nice work! :) I like the way you used the vinyl. One thing I love about mine is being able to see all the color and texture–but with yours you get even MORE of that! :) Fabulous. And I love the metal strip idea. I’ve got some wall space above our stove/oven that would be perfect to mount a couple strips for the spice jars… Hmmmmm…

  5. Those are stinking GREAT! What a fabulous idea and perfectly excecuted!
You should come link this up to my weekly Thursday through Sunday Making It With Allie Link Party! I think it would make a Fabulous addition!

  7. If i wrote “i love you” would that be blog creepy? I seriously have been looking for MONTHS for a craft to do with my baby food jars and all i could find was the Christmas Tree and Sewing Pin Cushion, which are great too but not what i was looking for nor what i needed around the house. THIS IS FAR BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU i can’t wait to do it.

  8. I love this idea. I would tweak one little tiny thing though. With the spices that are darker, I think I would use white or yellow vinyl so that you could see the label easier.

Very cute, thanks for the idea!

    • Thank you! I have a vinyl cutter. If you have access to a cricut or silhouette you could design your own. I also sell the vinyl on my vinyl website if you’re interested (www.vinylchitchat.com, they’re under organization).

  9. I just happened upon this and have to ask. I have never used Vinyl before and in searching for printable vinyl I have not found any that require rubbing on, I prefer that so it is not like a sticker. Can you tell me what you used? I am probably just not looking in the right place. THESE ARE SO CUTE!! Thank yoou <3

  12. Hi – I’m in the process of completing the baby food jars spice cars, BUT I’m in need of the labels for the bottoms if my jars. Would you be interested in selling them to me? Please let me know. Thanks!

    • I would be happy to. I’m out of town right now and will email later in the week when I get home, or you can email me at vinylchitchat (at)gmail (dot)com.

  13. Hey! I love this idea and I’ve already procured some bottles and magnets. Can you tell me more about the labels you used? Where did you get them? What are they called?

    Thanks! :)

    • I have a vinyl cutting machine so I made the labels myself. If you’re interested in something like that you can contact through this blog. Other ideas I’ve seen have been modge podge with printed labels, good luck!
